You’ll find the trailhead for the North Shore Loop just north of the Glacial Grooves by the boat ramp. The trail is cool, even in summer, shaded by tall cedars, oaks, and maples. Look for the northern bog violet growing along the path. You won’t see it anywhere else on the planet. The prize at that end of the trail is the Alvar Preserve: a globally rare habitat created by the coastal conditions upon the Island’s limestone shore. Breathtaking.
